Breast Lift

If you have grown dissatisfied with the look of your breasts after having children, losing weight, or simply aging against gravity, or if you have never been happy with sagging breasts that you may have been born with, you may benefit from a breast lift.

Also known as mastopexy, a breast lift compensates for the loss of youthful breast shape and skin elasticity by raising the breasts, removing excess skin, and firming the surrounding tissue. Breast lifts can also reduce large areolas.

A breast lift may be right for you if:

  • Your breasts have sagged or lost their shape or volume
  • Your breasts are flat, elongated or pendulous (drooping)
  • Your nipples point down or fall below the breast crease
  • You have stretched skin and large areolas
  • One breast is lower than the other

You should know that breast lifts can’t make your breasts look larger, smaller, or rounder. If you are looking for a different breast size or shape, you may want to consider breast augmentation or breast reduction. These can be done alone or in conjunction with a breast lift.

The Procedure

Breast lifts require anesthesia. Dr. Quardt will discuss what type of anesthesia is most appropriate for you.

There are three kinds of incisions typically used for a breast lift: around the areola, around the areola and down to the breast crease, and an anchor-shaped incision that goes around the areola, down to the breast crease, and along the breast crease. Dr. Quardt tries to place many of these incisions along the natural contours of the breast to minimize their appearance after surgery. The choice of incision type depends in part on your breast size, breast shape, size and location of your areolas and nipples, how much your breasts sag, how elastic your skin is, and how much extra skin you may have. Dr. Quardt will talk with you about which one is most appropriate.

Recovery

You will be given bandages and/or a support bra after your breast lift to help minimize swelling and support your new breast contour.

You will be able to see the results of your breast lift right away. As swelling and bruising subside, your new look will become even more apparent. Your incision marks will gradually fade to their final appearance over the following months.

Your Consultation with Dr. Quardt

During your consultation, Dr. Quardt will talk with you about your expectations, whether you are a good candidate for a breast lift, and what to expect during and after surgery, including potential side effects.
