Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery)

Cosmetic eyelid surgery, known as blepharoplasty, rejuvenates the upper and/or lower eyelids and surrounding area. By improving loose skin, fatty deposits, bags under the eyes and eyelid droopiness, blepharoplasty make you look more rested and youthful.

Blepharoplasty is most useful for:

  • Loose, saggy skin that obscures the natural contour of the upper eyelid and can impair your vision
  • Fatty deposits that make the upper eyelids puffy
  • Bags under the eyes
  • Droopy lower eyelids that reveal the white below your iris
  • Excess skin and fine wrinkles on your lower eyelids

The Procedure

Blepharoplasty requires anesthesia. Dr. Quardt will discuss what type of anesthesia is most appropriate for you.

The type and location of the incisions for cosmetic eyelid surgery depend on which parts of the eyelids you are trying to correct. Whichever kind of incisions are appropriate for you, Dr. Quardt will place them so that the scars are hidden as much as possible within the natural lines of your eyes, such as in the crease of your upper eyelid or just beneath the lash line of your lower eyelid. Some can even be hidden inside the lower eyelid.

During the blepharoplasty procedure, Dr. Quardt can reposition and remove fat deposits, tighten muscles and other tissues, and remove excess skin as appropriate.

Recovery

After surgery, Dr. Quardt and her staff will give you cold compresses or creams to soothe your eyes. You may experience some swelling, bruising or irritation around the eyelids as well as dry eyes. Over-the-counter medicines usually take care of such discomforts. Dr. Quardt will talk with you about your post-operative care, including any medicines you should take and the importance of staying out of the sun.

As the swelling and bruising fade, you will be able to see the results of your blepharoplasty: smoother, better-defined eyelids and a less tired look. It can take up to a year for your incision lines to reach their final appearance.

Your Consultation with Dr. Quardt

During your consultation, Dr. Quardt will talk with you about your expectations, whether you are a good candidate for blepharoplasty, and what to expect during and after surgery, including potential side effects.
