Buttock Augmentation
Shapely and rounded posterior is desired by many women. People that consider plastic surgery for enhanced proportions and contours have several options for improving the shape of their rear. Buttocks can be enhanced through butt implants or Brazilian butt lift surgery. However, both procedures come with a certain level of post-operative risks.
During your pre-op consultation, your surgeon will inform you about the potential risks and complication to help you make a well-considered decision. Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Suzanne Quardt (Dr. Q) provides buttock augmentation enhancement to patients in Palm Springs, Palm Desert, Rancho Mirage, Beverly Hills, CA, and surrounding locations.
Risks of Buttock Implants
Risks of buttock enhancement cosmetic surgery are well documented. These include:
Implant extrusion
This is one of the most common complications of buttock implants. Intimate knowledge of the size and shape of gluteus major muscle is required for performing safe buttock augmentation using implants. The secret to avoiding this complication is to pick implants that can comfortably be placed within the muscle.
The difficulty comes with patients desiring larger implants. Unfortunately, buttock implants will extrude outside the muscle if they are larger in width than the gluteus major. This will result in a contour deformity as the muscle edge will become visible through the skin.
Another concerning factor is that the implant on tearing out of the muscle will force its way through the skin incision causing severe implant extrusion.
Implant infection
Implant infection in buttock augmentation is a common risk. It’s possible in any surgery where any foreign material, such as an implant is placed in the body. There are several intraoperative precautions that need to be taken by your surgeon for avoiding contamination.
Double prepping protocol is critical for ensuring the area of the planned incision does not get cross-contaminated. In addition, planned implant and the pocket needs to be irrigated with an antibiotic solution before placement. Finally, the surgeon should use minimal touch technique for handling the implant.
There are several post-operative precautions that can be used for minimizing the risk of this type of infection.
Risks of Brazilian Butt Lift
There are various risks to buttock lift plastic surgery, such as:
Buttock asymmetry
Asymmetrical butt is a common complication in fat transfer augmentations. Your surgeon could have placed too little or too much fat on one side causing a mismatch. The only way to fix this complication is through a revision surgery.
Seroma
Fluid accumulation or seroma formation is usually handled by placing drainage tubes in the surgical area. The doctor may also remove any fluid accumulation using a needle and syringe following the surgery.
Poor wound healing
Incision area may begin to separate or heal poorly. Your surgeon will prescribe antibiotics in this case.
Scarring
Incision scars following a butt lift are permanent. However, they are usually placed in discreet locations.
Changes in skin sensation
Repositioning of the tissues following a buttock lift can affect superficial sensory nerves. You may feel numbness or reduced sensation in the area. The numbness generally reduces in a few months or years following the procedure.
