Many people have excess fat deposits along the back of the arm. These areas of fat are difficult to address with diet and exercise alone.
An experienced surgeon can help tone the inner and outer areas of the upper arm along with the biceps and shoulders. Liposuction cosmetic surgery contours the arm to enhance the overall shape and appearance more effectively than any other solution.
Patients consider liposuction for the arms for various reasons, including:
- Attaining slimmer arms that tone easily
- Eliminating the appearance of flabby arms, specifically the back of the arms
- Appear more attractive in pictures
- Reduce the fat that hangs down from the back of the arms
Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Suzanne Quardt (Dr. Q) provides liposuction for the arms to patients in Palm Springs, Palm Desert, Rancho Mirage, and surrounding locations.
Anesthesia and Treatment Experience
The surgeon will give the patient some type of anesthesia-general, local, or twilight sleep anesthesia. The procedure is most commonly undertaken using local anesthesia. The patient will experience a stinging sensation when the local anesthetic is injected.
This will numb or freeze the arms. After the arms are numbed, the patient will usually experience little discomfort during the surgery. However, some spot sensitivity may occur. Patients typically describe liposuction with local anesthetic as “not delightful, but tolerable.”
General anesthesia or twilight sleep anesthesia are also options for patients who do not wish to feel or remember anything. However, these options may lead to a groggy feeling from being knocked out as well as higher costs.
Techniques for Arm Liposuction
Liposuction only eliminates excess fat. It does not tighten or remove loose or hanging skin. Some patients have enough skin elasticity to enable the skin to tighten on its own. However, at times, patients may require an additional procedure, such as a tuck, to address loose skin.
In recent times, many patients are evaluating laser liposuction as a substitute for traditional liposuction. In general, laser liposuction is not “safer” or “better” than other types of liposuction procedures. Similar to traditional liposuction, laser liposuction will also not tighten loose skin.
Arm liposuction plastic surgery could be an effective way to achieve slimmer, more toned arms. However, it is advisable for patients to understand that the technique used is secondary to the skills and experience of the operating surgeon.
An experienced surgeon will match the technique to the unique requirements of the patient, rather than vice-versa. This is vital to attaining excellent outcomes.
Recovery
After the arm liposuction procedure, the patient will be sent home with aftercare guidelines, prescriptions, and an appointment for post-op follow-up. The after-effects of the procedure include temporary inflammation, bruising, and changes in sensation including tingling and numbness.
The recovery will differ for each patient, but most people will be able to resume work after a few days. The bruising will typically resolve in two to four weeks, and the swelling will take one to two months to subside.
Arm Lift
The surgeon may recommend a brachioplasty or upper arm lift along with liposuction if the patient has excess skin in the upper arm. However, this can cause a long scar down the inside of the arm. While the scar is inconspicuous when the arms are down at the sides, it may be noticeable when the arm is raised.
