Varicose Vein Treatment
Laser varicose vein procedure utilizes laser heat for reducing varicose veins. These are swollen and bulging veins that usually occur on the calves and thighs. Laser device sends a thin radiation beam in the form of light energy.
The surgery shrinks and closes the varicose vein and causes scar tissues to form within the vessel. This works well to seal off the vein. Blood makes its way through other nearby veins in that case.
Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Suzanne Quardt (Dr. Q) provides varicose vein treatments to patients in Palm Springs, Palm Desert, Rancho Mirage, Beverly Hills, CA, and surrounding communities.
Simple Laser Treatment
In this type of laser treatment, light energy is beamed on the outside of the skin. This can be used for treating tiny varicose veins and spider veins that are present just under the surface of the skin. Generally, more than one session is required. These are scheduled every 6 – 12 weeks.
Endovenous Laser Treatment
Endovenous laser treatment is used for treating larger varicose veins, usually in the legs. A catheter or thin tube is used for passing a laser fiber into the vein. The doctor can look at your vein on a duplex ultrasound screen. Laser therapy is less painful as compared to vein stripping and litigation. It also involves a shorter recovery period. Only light sedative or local anesthesia is required for laser treatment.
Who Needs Endovenous Laser Vein Surgery?
Laser surgery may be suggested by your healthcare provider if the varicose veins are red, sore, or inflamed (swollen). Laser surgery may also be performed if the skin is irritated. Varicose veins are painful even if they are not a serious health condition. You may not like the way they look either.
Endovenous Varicose Vein Surgery Procedure
The surgery doesn’t require an overnight stay and can be performed at the surgeon’s office. The procedure doesn’t take more than an hour. Generally, the following procedure is followed by endovenous laser vein surgery:
- The laser specialist will numb the skin where the catheter or tube needs to be inserted. They will give a shot of numbing medication along the vein requires treatment.
- Doppler ultrasound device will be used by the plastic surgeon for checking the vein before and during the surgery. The doppler device uses sound waves for creating an image of the vein on a dual computer screen.
- A small incision or cut will be made by the laser specialist for inserting the catheter. This will be guided into the targeted varicose vein. Your surgeon will then place a laser fiber into the catheter. The laser will heat the length of the varicose vein slowly as the laser specialist pulls out the catheter slowly. The vein will eventually shrink after closing up.
You will be asked to walk for about 30 – 60 minutes right after the procedure. There may be slight bruising on the legs which will disappear after a few days.
