Gynecomastia is the medical term for the swelling of breast tissue in males. It is usually caused by hormones, genetics, disease or medications. While gynecomastia is not a dangerous health problem, it can sometimes cause pain—and more commonly makes men and boys painfully self-conscious.

Surgery to correct gynecomastia, also called male breast reduction, is one of the most common cosmetic surgical procedures among men. Male breast reduction for gynecomastia reduces breast size and can improve the appearance of sagging, stretched or overdeveloped breasts and areolas.
