Ear surgery, or otoplasty, can correct the appearance of protruding, disfigured or disproportionate ears in children and adults. Dr. Quardt performs otoplasty to restore a more aesthetic shape, balance or position to one or both ears, as well as to correct certain ear injuries or dissatisfying results of previous ear surgeries.
Children and teens can be helped with otoplasty as well as adults. Dr. Quardt is careful to work with children and teens to ensure that they are good candidates for ear surgery. This includes children who are at least 5 years old, cooperative, and do not protest the idea of surgery; and healthy teens who have realistic expectations.
The Procedure
Otoplasty requires anesthesia. Dr. Quardt will discuss what type of anesthesia is most appropriate for you or your child.
Dr. Quardt usually makes incisions on the back surface of the ear(s). When she needs to make an incision in the front, she will hide it within the natural ear folds.
During the ear surgery, Dr. Quart will adjust the rim of the ear (known as the antihelical fold) and the cartilage that makes up the largest and deepest indentation in the outer ear. She uses permanent internal stitches to shape and secure the cartilage. Each technique is personalized for her patients, and she takes care to avoid an unnatural “pinned-back” look.
Recovery
After ear surgery, you or your child will wear surgical dressings to help maintain your new ear shape. When the dressings come off and the ears continue to heal, you will be able to see the various improvements to your ears.
